Open Graph checker for link previews

This free Open Graph checker shows how a link to your page looks when someone shares it on WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Facebook or X. It lists every og: and twitter: tag it finds and points out what is missing.

What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph tags are meta tags in the head of a page that tell social networks and chat apps which title, description and image to show when a link is shared. The Open Graph protocol requires og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url; og:description is optional but useful. Without og:image, a shared link may appear without a picture or with an image the platform picks itself. This checker reads the tags from your page and builds an approximate preview for four networks.

What the Open Graph checker shows

The tool fetches the address you enter and reads the meta tags in the head of the page. From those tags it builds a preview card in the style of WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Facebook and X. The previews are a close approximation: each network applies its own layout, cropping and caching, so the real card can differ slightly.
  • A preview card for WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Facebook and X
  • Every og: tag on the page, such as og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url
  • Every twitter: tag, such as twitter:card and twitter:image
  • A warning when og:title or og:image is missing, and a tip when og:description is missing

How to read the preview

The preview takes its title from og:title. If that is missing, it uses twitter:title and then the normal page title. The description works the same way and falls back to the meta description. The image comes from og:image or twitter:image; when neither exists, the card shows No image. The card below the previews lists every tag found. A green card means the main Open Graph tags are in place. An amber card lists what is missing, so you know exactly which tag to add.

Common Open Graph mistakes

Most broken link previews come down to a handful of causes.
  • No og:image, so shared links show up without a picture
  • An image on a server that blocks outside visitors or needs a login, so networks cannot fetch it
  • The same og:title and image on every page, so every shared link looks identical
  • An old image that keeps showing after you replaced it, because the network cached it
  • An og:url that points to a different page than the one being shared

What to do next

Add the missing tags to the head of the page, or set them in your website builder. Give important pages their own image and a title that works out of context, because people see it in a chat or feed without the rest of your site around it. Changed the image but the old one still shows? Facebook caches images by their address, so the simplest fix is to upload the new image under a new file name. Facebook's Sharing Debugger can also fetch the page again. Then run this checker once more to confirm the new tags.

How to use the Open Graph checker

  1. Enter the address

Paste the full address of the page you want to share, such as a blog post or a product page.

  2. Show the previews

Click Show previews. The tool reads the Open Graph and Twitter tags of the page.

  3. Check the tags

Look at the four preview cards and the list of tags. Missing tags are listed with a short explanation.

  4. Fix and test again

Add or correct the tags, save the page and run the check again before you share the link.

Questions about Open Graph

What is the Open Graph protocol?
Open Graph is a protocol, documented at ogp.me, that turns a web page into a rich object for social platforms. Its four required properties are og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Optional tags such as og:description, og:site_name and og:locale add more detail.
Why does my link show no picture when I share it?
Usually the page has no og:image tag, or the image address cannot be fetched from outside. Add an og:image that points to a publicly reachable image and check again.
Is the preview exactly what people will see?
Close, but not exact. Each network uses its own layout, crops images in its own way and keeps previews in a cache. Use the preview to spot missing or wrong tags; the final card is up to the network.
Why does an old image still show after I changed it?
Facebook caches images by their address and does not update them unless the address changes. Upload the new image under a new file name, or let Facebook's Sharing Debugger fetch the page again.
What is the difference between og: and twitter: tags?
twitter: tags are the card tags used by X, such as twitter:card, which sets the card type. This tool shows both sets and uses twitter: tags as a fallback when an Open Graph tag is missing.
Does SitePack add Open Graph tags for me?
Yes. Every SitePack page gets og:title, og:description, og:url and og:site_name, plus a 1200 by 630 pixel share image built from the page's own image and title, and a twitter:card for a large image on X.
