QR code generator

This free QR code generator turns a web address, a piece of text, your Wi-Fi network or a contact card into a QR code you can print right away. Choose your own colours and download the code as PNG or SVG, without an account.

How do I make a QR code?

Choose what the code should contain, fill in the fields and the QR code appears straight away in the preview. Pick a dark colour on a light background, then download it as PNG for screens and documents or as SVG for print. The code is static: what you enter is stored in the code itself, so it never expires and works without SitePack.

What this generator makes

The generator builds the code in your browser. Nothing you type, not even a Wi-Fi password, is sent to a server. You can choose between four kinds of content.
  • Web address: opens a page, for example your menu, booking page or product page
  • Text: shows a short message on the phone screen
  • Wi-Fi network: lets guests join your network without typing the password (WPA/WPA2/WPA3, WEP or open, hidden networks too)
  • Contact card (vCard): saves your name, company, phone, email and website in the address book

How to read the preview and the warnings

The preview shows the exact code you will download, with a clear border of four modules around it. QR codes need that blank margin on all sides to scan reliably, so do not crop it away. If you see a warning about low contrast, the colours are too close to each other, or you have chosen a light code on a dark background. Many phone cameras read inverted codes badly. Go back to a dark colour on a light background. If the generator says there is too much content, shorten the text or use a web address that links to the longer information instead.

Common mistakes with QR codes

  • Printing the code too small to scan from where people stand
  • Cropping the white margin or placing the code on a busy photo
  • Using brand colours that are too light, such as yellow or light grey
  • Linking to a page that is not mobile friendly or loads slowly
  • Printing a link to a temporary page, so the code stops working later
  • Not testing the printed proof with two different phones

What to do next

A static code cannot be changed after printing. If the destination may change, let the code point to a page on your own website, such as yoursite.com/menu. You can then update that page at any time while the printed code stays the same. Before you print a large run, scan a proof with an Android phone and an iPhone, in the light where the code will hang. Then check that the page it opens loads fast and works well on a small screen.

How to use the QR code generator

  1. Choose the content

Select a web address, text, Wi-Fi network or contact card.

  2. Fill in the details

Enter the address, text, network name and password, or your contact details. The preview updates while you type.

  3. Set your colours

Pick a dark code colour and a light background. Watch for the contrast warning.

  4. Download and test

Download PNG for screens and office documents or SVG for print, then scan a printed proof with two phones.

Questions about QR codes

Is this QR code generator really free?
Yes. You do not need an account, there is no watermark and you can make as many codes as you like.
Does my QR code expire?
No. The content is stored in the code itself, not on our servers, so it keeps working as long as the destination exists.
Can I track how often my code is scanned?
Not with the code itself. If you link to a page on your own website, you can see the visits in your website statistics, for example by adding a campaign parameter to the address.
Is PNG or SVG better?
SVG is a vector file that stays sharp at any size, so it suits print and signs. PNG is a 1024 pixel image that works well in documents, presentations and on screens.
Is my Wi-Fi password safe?
The code is made in your browser and the password is not sent to SitePack. Keep in mind that anyone who scans the code can read the password, so only hang it where you want guests to connect.
Can I change the link after printing?
No. To keep that option, point the code to a page on your own website and change that page instead.
