Wero and iDEAL: when does iDEAL become Wero?

Wero is the new European way to pay straight from your bank account, and iDEAL is moving to it step by step. Since early 2026 Dutch checkouts show iDEAL | Wero, and the name iDEAL is expected to disappear by the end of 2027. This guide explains what Wero is, the timeline, what changes for your customers and your webshop, and what Wero costs.

In short
  • Wero is a European account-to-account payment method from EPI, a group of European banks and payment providers.
  • iDEAL moves to Wero in steps: the iDEAL | Wero label since early 2026, the technical switch during 2026, the iDEAL name gone by the end of 2027.
  • For shoppers paying stays almost the same: pick your bank and approve in your banking app.
  • For webshops the main changes are a new pricing model and a way for customers to dispute payments.
  • On SitePack, iDEAL and Wero are both built into SitePack Payments, so your checkout follows the switch.

What is Wero?

Wero is a European payment method based on instant payments. The money goes straight from the customer's bank account to the seller, approved in the customer's own banking app. It is built by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a group of European banks and payment providers. In the Netherlands that includes ING, Rabobank and ABN AMRO. Wero is meant to become one way to pay across Europe: in webshops, between people and later in physical shops. According to iDEAL, more than 45 million Europeans already used Wero by late 2025.

Why iDEAL is moving to Wero

iDEAL works well, but only in the Netherlands. In 2023 EPI took over Currence, the company behind iDEAL. The plan is to replace national methods like iDEAL with one European standard, so a Dutch shopper can pay a German webshop the same way, and the other way round. For Europe it is also about independence: a European alternative to the card networks for everyday payments. For you as a seller it means one payment method that more customers in more countries can use.

When does iDEAL become Wero? The timeline

The switch happens in steps. The dates below come from iDEAL, Thuiswinkel.org and reporting in Emerce. Some dates are expected rather than fixed, and your payment provider decides exactly when your shop moves.

The timeline

  • Early 2026: Dutch checkouts show the combined iDEAL | Wero label
  • From April 2026: transactions move to Wero in the background, step by step
  • From October 2026: the first Dutch webshops can switch to Wero
  • End of 2026: the focus shifts fully to Wero
  • End of 2027: the name iDEAL is expected to disappear from checkouts
  • 1 January 2028: purchase protection for buyers is planned

What changes for your customers

Very little at first. Customers still choose their bank and approve the payment in their banking app, just like with iDEAL. The CEO of iDEAL said in Emerce that about 95 percent of the experience stays the same. Over time customers get more: they can dispute a payment through their bank, and purchase protection is planned. Paying in physical shops and paying between people are part of the plan too.
  • Same steps: pick your bank, approve in the app
  • A new logo and, later, only the name Wero
  • Disputes and purchase protection that iDEAL never had

What changes for your webshop

Two things matter most. First the price. iDEAL usually has a fixed fee per payment. Wero is expected to work with a percentage of the amount, which makes a difference if your orders are large. In the Netherlands a price cap applies until the end of 2028. Second, disputes. With iDEAL a payment was final. With Wero a customer can contest a payment, first with you, then through their bank. Clear product pages, honest delivery times and a good returns process help you avoid them.
  • Show the iDEAL | Wero label in your checkout
  • Check how your provider prices Wero
  • Prepare for customer disputes
  • Ask your payment provider when your shop switches
Good to know
Thuiswinkel.org says the end date for iDEAL still depends on a market consultation. Treat the end of 2027 as the expected date, not a fixed one.

What Wero costs on SitePack

SitePack Payments has iDEAL and Wero built in, so you do not sign a separate contract. You pay a fixed rate per successful payment, depending on your package. All rates exclude VAT.
  • iDEAL: €0.25 per payment on Starter, €0.22 on Grow
  • Wero up to €50: €0.25 on Starter, €0.22 on Grow
  • Wero above €50: €0.22 plus 0.60% on Starter, €0.20 plus 0.55% on Grow
  • Wero above €1,000: €2.95 plus 0.12% on Starter, €2.80 plus 0.10% on Grow

Wero outside the Netherlands

Wero already works in Germany, France and Belgium for payments between people. In Belgium and Germany shoppers can also use it to pay online, and German webshops could start accepting it in December 2025. Luxembourg and the Netherlands follow. Paying in physical shops is planned to start at the end of 2026, beginning in France. Selling across borders? With Wero in your checkout, more customers in more countries can pay the way they are used to.
